Six faculty named inaugural SIAM Fellows
Six members of the Brown mathematics and applied mathematics faculty are among the first group of fellows named by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the society announced recently. The honorific designation is conferred on SIAM members distinguished for their outstanding contributions to the fields of applied mathematics and computational science.
“Reflecting the diversity of the SIAM membership, these men and women come from five continents,” said SIAM president Douglas N. Arnold, “and work in academia, industry, and government laboratories. … These professionals have applied their work to endeavors ranging from mining to medicine. They have designed algorithms to make computing possible and written textbooks to train the next generation of mathematicians. Their contributions are truly outstanding.”
The six Brown faculty comprise one of the largest 2009 SIAM Fellow contingents from a single institution. They are:
Constantin Dafermos, Alumni-Alumnae University Professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics
Wendell H. Fleming, professor emeritus of mathematics and applied mathematics
Harold J. Kushner, professor emeritus of applied mathematics
David B. Mumford, professor of applied mathematics
Chi-Wang Shu, professor of applied mathematics
Walter Strauss, professor of mathematics and applied mathematics
