Fifteen named to endowed chairs
At its May meeting, the Corporation of Brown University approved four new professorships and a directorship, and announced the appointment of 15 faculty to named chairs.
At its annual business meeting on May 28, 2010, the Brown Corporation ratified endowed professorships and a directorship established by its Advisory and Executive Committee.
Three Chancellor’s Professorships have been established with support from Chancellor Thomas J. Tisch; and the Sigal Family Professorship in Humanistic Medicine, a clinical professorship in oncology, was made possible by a gift from the family of the late Phyllis and Irving Sigal. In addition, the University has established the Frederic M. Alper Directorship of Financial Aid with a gift from Frederic M. Alper, a 1960 Brown graduate, parent, and trustee emeritus.
The Corporation also approved the appointment of the following faculty to named chairs, effective July 1, 2010:
• Lundy Braun, Royce Family Professor in Teaching Excellence and Professor of Medical Science and Africana Studies
• Timothy Flanigan, Dean’s Professor of Medical Science
• Braden Fleming, Lucy Lippitt Professor of Orthopaedics in the Research Scholar Track
• Lina Fruzzetti, Royce Family Professor in Teaching Excellence and Professor of Anthropology
• Forrest Gander, Adele Kellenberg Seaver ’49 Professor of Creative Writing
Oncologist Fred J. Schiffman was named the inaugural holder of the Sigal Family Professorship in Humanistic Medicine.
