From poor Brown dropout to wealthy liquor magnate, Sidney Frank embodied the American dream – complete with a big cigar. The scholarships that bear his name enabled 49 members of the class of ’09 to earn Brown bachelor’s degrees.

In a blog entry on Anderson Cooper’s AC360 site, Brown Alumni Magazine Editor Norman Boucher tells the touching story of Sidney Frank, Brown dropout and liquor magnate, who picked up the phone one day in 2004 and gave President Ruth J. Simmons the kind of call a university leader can only dream about.

His initial gift of $100 million established the Sidney Frank Scholarships at Brown, paying the full cost for exceptional students who could not otherwise afford to attend the University. Now the first class of Sidney Frank Scholars has graduated.
