Winter Break services and closings

Are you wondering where to eat on campus, whether you can access your mailbox, or when the libraries will be open during Brown’s month-long break from classes? Read on.

The following is a partial list of office hours and closings during Winter Break. For a complete list, download the official University memo.

General Information

Brown University will be closed effective 7 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2008, and will resume its regular schedule at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2009.

BROWN UNIVERSITY SWITCHBOARD: The switchboard phone number, 401-863-1000, will provide a general closing announcement and offer a menu of directions and options for further information. Voice-activated directory assistance for faculty, staff, and department numbers will be available from this menu or by calling the operator directly at 401-863-6001.

PUBLIC SAFETY - 401-863-3322. Officers will be patrolling as usual, but administrative offices will be closed. Emergencies call 863-4111.

BUILDING-RELATED ISSUES - 401-863-3322. Most campus buildings will be closed and the heat will be curtailed during the winter break. Check the Facilities Management Web site for more information. Access to closed buildings must be arranged with the Department of Public Safety, 863-3322. SERVICE RESPONSE CENTER - 401-863-7800. With the exception of December 25 and January 1, the Service Response Center will be staffed from 8 a.m. to midnight. From midnight to 8 a.m. each day and all day on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day, calls will be handled by additional support through the Service Response Center.

DINING SERVICES - 401-863-3343. The Blue Room will be open Friday, December 19, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed December 22–January 5; reopens at 7 a.m. Tuesday, January, 6, 2009. The Ivy Room will be closed December 22–January 5, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. The Dining Services administrative offices will close at 5 p.m. Friday, December 19, and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2009. For additional information, visit the BDS Web site.

MAIL SERVICES - 401-863-2900. Open December 22, 23, 24, 27, 29, 30, 31, and January 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. to noon. Mail delivery will be scheduled with departments as needed during the break. Regular hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will resume January 5.

COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SERVICES - 401-863-HELP (4357): The CIS Help Desk will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2008. The CIT building and the CIS Computing Clusters (Rockefeller and Sciences Libraries as well as CIT area) will close at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2008. The CIT building will reopen at 7:30 a.m., the CIS Help Desk at 8:30 a.m., and the CIS Computing Clusters at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2009. During Winter Break, emergency issues can be reported by calling 863-HELP (4357) and selecting the appropriate option. CIS expects its technical services to remain operational during this time. CIS staff will monitor critical services, such as the network and e-mail, and will check messages daily, responding to critical outages as soon as possible. All non-critical inquiries will be addressed starting Monday, January 5, 2009. UNIVERSITY LIBRARY - 401-863-2165. All campus libraries, with the exception of the Rockefeller Library, will be closed effective Sunday, December 21, and will reopen on Monday, January 5. The Rockefeller Library will be open Monday, December 22, and Tuesday, December 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Rockefeller Library will be open Monday, December 29, through Wednesday, December 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Rockefeller Library will be closed Thursday, January 1, through Sunday, January 4, and will reopen on Monday, January 5. ATHLETICS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION: All satellite fitness centers are closing Saturday, December 20, 2008, at midnight and will resume normal hours on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at 6 a.m. OMAC will close Sunday, December 21, 2008, at 5 p.m. and will reopen Monday, January 5, 2009, at 6 a.m. Break hours will be in effect from Saturday, December 20, to Sunday, January 18, 2009: Monday-Friday from 6 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from noon–5 p.m. OMAC will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, and will reopen for regular operations on Tuesday, January 20, at 6 a.m. Additional information about Winter Break hours for recreational sport and fitness facilities may be found for each facility individually on the Recreational Sports Web page.  

safeRIDE Services during Winter Break:
Brown  Campus Shuttle: Last evening of service is Sunday, December 21, and resumes Wednesday, January 21, at 5 p.m.
BrownMed/Downcity Express: Service ends at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 19, and resumes Monday, January 5, at 8 a.m.  
121 South Main Express: Service ends at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 19 and resumes Monday, January 5 at 8:00 a.m.
onCall: Last evening of regular service is Sunday, December 21. safeRIDE will operate a modified on-call shuttle service beginning Monday, January 5 through Tuesday, January 20 from 5 p.m.-1 a.m. Passengers will need to call safeRIDE On-Call (863-1778) to request a ride and will be required to show Brown ID upon entering the vehicle;  formal registration will not be required. The regular service and schedule resumes Wednesday, January 21, at 5 p.m.
DSS onCall: Regular service ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 19. Special limited service will operate on Saturday, December 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, December 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Service resumes on Monday, January 5, with limited morning and afternoon express service. Morning service will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and afternoon service will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The regular service and schedule resumes Wednesday, January 21, at 8 a.m.

COLLEGE ADMISSION OFFICE - 401-863-2378. The Admission Office will be closed to the public from Monday, December 22, until 8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 5. The records and processing departments will continue to operate during this period. 

BOOKSTORE - 401-863-3168 (in RI); 1-800-695-2050 (toll-free). Open Monday, December 22 ,and Tuesday, December 23, from 9 a.m.  to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, December 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Thursday and Friday, December 25 and 26. Open Saturday, December 27, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, December 28, 11 a.m.  to 5 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday, December 29 and 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, December 31, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Closed January 1 and January 2. Open Saturday, January 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular bookstore hours resume January 4: Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday–Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. For additional information please visit our Web site.  

DIVISION OF ADVANCEMENT - 401-863-2374 (Development, Alumni Relations, International Advancement, and the Campaign for Academic Enrichment).  The division will be closed at noon on December 24, and completely closed on December 25 and January 1 and 2, 2009. Departmental representatives will provide phone coverage from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on December 22, 23, 24 (morning only), 26, 29, 30, and 31, and on January 2. Gift Accounting will be staffed from 6 a.m. to 1 pm on December 22 and 23; from 6 a.m. to noon on December 24; and from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 29, 30, 31, and January 2. Normal operational hours for the entire division will resume on January 5, 2009, at 8:30 a.m. Gifts can be made online using a credit card 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All credit card gifts must be processed online by midnight on December 31, 2008, for 2008 tax credit. Additional information is available by calling 401-863-2374 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

FINANCIAL AID - 401-863-2721. The Office of Financial Aid (including student employment) will close from Monday, December 22, to 8:30 a.m. Monday, January 5.  For general financial aid information (including deadline and application information), please visit our Web site. For urgent concerns during the break, please contact via e-mail: Financial_Aid@brown.edu (undergraduate dollege) or GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu (Graduate School – federal aid loan processing only). E-mails will be read daily throughout the break and a response will be provided within one business day.

GRADUATE STUDENT ADMISSIONS/GRADUATE SCHOOL – 401-863-2600. The Graduate School will be closed for normal business at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2008, and will reopen at 8:30 a.m on Monday, January 5, 2009. The Graduate School Admission Office will be open for application processing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 22, 23, 29, and 30. Additionally, the Graduate School Admission Office will be open for application processing from 9 a.m. to noon on December 24 and 31.

HEALTH SERVICES FOR STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF AND VISITORS ON CAMPUS - 401-863-3953. Emergency care will be available 24 hours, seven days a week, for medical emergencies. To access emergency services, call 863-4111 (Public Safety). EMS services will be provided by Providence Rescue from December 23 at 3 p.m. to January 4 at 7 a.m.; Brown EMS will provide these services during the rest of the break. Access both services by calling 863-4111.

REGISTRAR: The office will close from Monday, December 22, to 8:30 a.m. Monday, January 5. Faculty are reminded that grades for fall courses must be submitted through Banner which will be available 24/7 throughout the winter break, with the possible exception of times of system maintenance on Sunday mornings.
