In the Heights, the New York City–based musical written by Quiara Alegría Hudes ’04 MFA and produced by Jill Furman ’90, took home top honors at the Tony Awards on June 15, winning the prize for Best Musical. By the end of the night, In the Heights had won four Tonys; it was nominated for thirteen.
In the November/December 2007 Brown Alumni Magazine, senior writer Lawrence Goodman described the production: “An upbeat musical paean to Washington Heights, the largely Hispanic northern Manhattan neighborhood, the show features an infectious score by Lin-Manuel Miranda that combines rap, salsa, and merengue.” Miranda’s score won a Tony, as did the show’s choreography and orchestration.
