More than 100 items and services, ranging from coffee with Mayor David Cicilline to T-shirts bearing the likeness of President Ruth J. Simmons to passes for Disney World, went under the auctioneers’ gavel on the main Green Thursday afternoon. The Brown chapter of literary society Alpha Delta Phi holds the auction every year to kick off Spring Weekend and raise funds to support a local literacy charity.

The weather cooperated with temperatures near 70, drawing crowds of sunbathers and even students writing papers on laptop computers. Bidding became heated shortly before 3 p.m. when two sets of Spring Weekend concert tickets went on the block. Students from around the Green rushed toward the auction, which was set up in front of the Faunce House steps, and raised their hands frantically to win prized tickets to the sold-out show.
